Daily gas consumption nears 615 mcm

SHANA (Tehran) – The head of the National Iranian Gas Company said about 615 million cubic meters of gas were consumed by the residential, commercial and small industrial sectors over the past 24 hours, accounting for 72% of the total gas delivered to the national grid.

In a statement released by the company, CEO Saeid Tavakoli cited a widespread drop in temperatures and the continuation of cold weather into next week, stressing the need for heightened vigilance and full preparedness by provincial gas companies. A new cold wave has spread across most parts of the country, he said, pushing gas consumption in the residential, commercial and small industrial sectors to about 615 million cubic meters in the past day.

Tavakoli said forecasts indicate cold conditions will persist in the coming days. Based on current estimates, consumption in those sectors could rise to about 650 million cubic meters by the end of the week and, if the cold continues—particularly in central plateau regions—could reach about 680 million cubic meters next week. That level would represent nearly 80% of the country’s total gas production.

Managing Consumption to Maintain Grid Stability

Tavakoli emphasized the importance of demand management under such conditions, noting that as the share of residential, commercial and small industrial use rises, targeted consumption controls in other sectors are necessary to maintain grid stability.

He said measures are being implemented under Cabinet approvals and a broader plan to reform consumption patterns and tariffs. Monitoring and inspections of government agencies are underway, and customers classified as high- or very high-consumption users will face higher tariffs.

Tavakoli also highlighted the public’s role in navigating the cold spell, urging simple steps such as setting indoor temperatures to 20 degrees Celsius (68 Fahrenheit), wearing warmer clothing, installing thick curtains and covering evaporative cooler vents. Such measures, he said, can significantly reduce gas use and help ensure a stable supply for all sectors.
