Active participation of petchem industry paves way for environmental pollution reduction

SHANA (Tehran) – The head of the Department of the Environment stated that the country's petrochemical industry has recognized the inevitability of moving towards environmental conservation. She expressed optimism about the active involvement of the petrochemical sector, hoping that this initiative would lead to positive outcomes in reducing pollution.

Shina Ansari made these comments on Saturday, during the "Plastic Pollution Crisis: Challenges and New Opportunities" conference. She noted that plastic pollution has become one of the world’s significant challenges. In recent years, efforts have been made globally to limit plastic consumption.

Ansari emphasized that plastic pollution, particularly in water resources and oceans, has created serious risks. Given these dangers, she said a global consensus and collaboration to address the issue is increasingly urgent. The issue has also become a priority in the United Nations Environmental Programme's agenda.

Highlighting the importance of environmental concerns, particularly plastic pollution, she pointed out that this type of pollution threatens both human health and the survival of other living organisms. Numerous studies indicate that microplastics can enter water sources, posing significant health risks.

Role of polymer industries in reducing environmental pollution

Ansari stressed that while plastic is used in various industries, including medicine, construction, and others, it has also created pollution. This material, designed to improve human life, now contributes to widespread environmental contamination, visible in many recreational, tourist, and coastal areas.

Referring to waste management and the vital role of industries, particularly polymer industries, Ansari highlighted the potential of these industries. By adopting eco-friendly technologies and producing environmentally friendly products, she believes these sectors can significantly reduce plastic pollution.

She concluded by emphasizing that environmental challenges can only be solved through global cooperation. The petrochemical industry in the country has come to realize that moving toward environmental conservation is essential, and Ansari welcomed the sector's active participation in addressing pollution. She expressed hope that this initiative will lead to effective and meaningful progress in reducing plastic pollution.
