Daily diesel consumption drops by 5m liters through consumption management, anti-smuggling efforts

SHANA (Tehran) – The CEO of the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORDC) announced a daily average reduction of 5 million liters in diesel consumption in the current Iranian year (1404) compared to last year.

Mohammad-Sadeq Azimifar attributed this success to the implementation of control policies, the use of smart tools to combat fuel smuggling, and increased oversight of major non-power plant consumers.

Speaking at a meeting of the working group for the prevention and combating of oil product smuggling on Tuesday, Azimifar cited the latest fuel consumption statistics, noting a significant decline in diesel use in non-power plant sectors.

He stated that average daily diesel consumption in non-power plant sectors from the start of the year through late July reached about 81 million liters, down from 86 million liters during the same period last year. As a result of this decrease and increased diesel production at refineries, reserves are at a favorable level, with current stockpiles for power plants 72% higher than the same time last year.

The deputy oil minister emphasized that, based on previous years' trends; consumption should have risen by 5% this year. However, the reduction was achieved through stricter control measures, smart anti-smuggling tools, and heightened monitoring of major non-power plant consumers.

Azimifar explained that non-power plant consumption includes diesel allocated to transportation, agriculture, industry, and other sectors (excluding power plants). Precise management of consumption in these areas aims to protect national interests and prevent illegal diversion of oil products. He added that sustaining this downward trend not only reduces government costs but also helps regulate the fuel market and preserve national reserves.

Since the start of the current administration, he noted, the use of smart fuel distribution systems and intensified inspections have strengthened oversight of oil product consumption, particularly in non-power plant sectors.

Anti-smuggling control policies have been consistently enforced, supported by high-ranking officials and effective collaboration among responsible agencies, security forces, and the anti-smuggling headquarters.

In closing, Azimi-Far thanked the president and the oil minister for their continued support and efforts, which played a key role in achieving this milestone.
