According to president.ir, Masoud Pezeshkian made the remarks at the ceremony marking the start of the university academic year. He said that solving problems requires looking at an issue from several angles, weighing the interventions available, and taking the necessary steps gradually in order to find a suitable solution. Otherwise, he said, if a decision is made all at once and everyone is simply told to comply, the problem cannot be expected to go away.
Turning to petrol pricing and the need to consider its economic and social dimensions, he added that everyone knows the real costs of supplying and transporting petrol cannot be ignored. Transport costs alone may reach 4,000 to 5,000 tomans, he said, meaning that the petrol the country supplies and delivers to the point of consumption is moved at a cost of around 5,000 tomans but sold at 1,500. The question now, he said, is how to manage this issue so that people are not alarmed, while the benefits of these decisions are also distributed to the public fairly.
The president stated that the issue is clear in principle, but how it is resolved matters. If the government intervened on petrol all at once and without regard to social conditions, he warned, the whole society could be thrown into disarray. He said it is therefore important to recognise that resolving economic and social problems requires not only a precise understanding of the issue but also the choice of an appropriate method of implementation.
