Iran launches first methane emissions monitoring project

SHANA (Tehran) – Iran’s first methane emissions monitoring project has been implemented in the country’s Region 1 Gas Transmission Operations.

Touraj Rostami, director of Region 1 Gas Transmission Operations, said the project was carried out as part of the Iranian Gas Transmission Company’s methane emissions measurement and monitoring program.

The project measured methane emissions at gas compressor stations and along pipelines operated by Region 1, Rostami told Shana.

He said the results will enable the company to accurately identify leak points, prioritize corrective measures and conduct follow-up monitoring after repairs. The project is also expected to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve efficiency and prevent gas losses.

Rostami said other major environmental initiatives in the region include construction of a waste storage facility and rehabilitation of the wastewater treatment package at the Shalamcheh gas export metering station, roofing the waste storage platform at the surplus goods warehouse in Ahvaz, and installing a drip irrigation system at the administrative headquarters.

He said safety remains the top priority in all operational activities. In recent months, the region has carried out smart pigging operations on national gas pipelines, repaired the pipeline supplying the Khorramshahr power plant after damage caused by the Third Imposed War, performed live maintenance on the 56-inch valve at the sixth pipeline’s receiver and the 20-inch valve on the Gotvand pipeline, and repaired leaks in launcher and receiver doors on the sixth national gas pipeline, all in compliance with safety requirements.

In the area of passive defense, Rostami cited an A-level crisis-management drill, incident-command training for managers and department heads, updated security risk assessments, establishment of a business continuity planning committee and technical meetings with other operating regions to address challenges facing the gas transmission network.

“Strengthening the resilience of facilities against natural hazards and potential threats is one of the region’s main priorities,” Rostami said, adding that all development projects are implemented with safety and passive-defense requirements taken into account.
