208,000 Liters of Smuggled Fuel Seized in Northeastern Iran

TEHRAN, March 02 (Shana) -- Police have seized and discharged 208,000 liters of smuggled fuel in the northeastern city of Miandoab during the past 11 months.

The discoveries include 4,000 liters of gasoline, 92,000 liters of kerosene and 112,000 tons of gasoil seized by police during the past 11 months.

The discoveries were made by round-the-clock monitoring of the forces in the border areas of the country.

Every liter of gasoline is at $0.331 which is relatively lower than its price in neighboring countries including Turkey, making the item tantalizing for opportunist smugglers.

Fuel smuggling is a serious malady in Iran's economy and the government has devised numerous plans to curb smuggling of fuels which have not yet bore much fruit.
