A project for collecting and injecting gas accompanying oil at Kupal oilfield in Khuzestan province was inaugurated Thursday in the presence of Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh and a group of senior Oil Ministry officials.

The project aims to prevent oil waste resulting from reduced pressure of oil reservoirs and eliminating extra costs for stabilizing the oil output level. The project includes daily injection of 150 million cu. ft. (4.28 million cu. m.) of gas to two wells of Asmari reservoir through two gas injection and collection posts via two separate pipelines. Another goal of the project is to manufacture installations for increasing pressure and injecting gas to Kupal field and transferring them to gas and liquid gas factory No. 400. The current primary recycling at Kupal field stands at 663 million barrels of crude oil. Following the gas injection, secondary crude output from the field will reach 174 million barrels with final recycling projected at 837 million barrels of crude oil. Preventing daily burning of 9 million cu. m. of gas and producing about 2,000 barrels of gas liquids per day are other objectives of the project. The project for collection and injection of accompanying gas at Kupal field was carried out at the cost of 200 billion rials during five phases. It was implemented by Iranian consultant engineers and contractors supervised by the engineering and construction department of the National Iranian South Oil Company (NISOC). The active wells of Kupal oilfield produce 106 million cu. ft. (3 million cu. m.) of accompanying gas and 101,000 barrels of oil. Kupal oilfield, including Asmari and Bangestan reservoirs, is located 60 km east of Ahvaz and is covered by Maroun Oil and Gas Production Company, which is a subsidiary of NISOC. At present, Asmari reservoirs, as the main reservoir of Maroun Oil and Gas Production Company produces more than 508,000 barrels of oil per day, which is projected to reach 585,000 barrels a day. A total of more than 1.2 billion cu. ft. (34 million cu. m.) of gas will be injected to the field.
