TEHRAN -- Zavin Kalat Dam was inaugurated Wednesday, January 21 in the presence of deputy energy minister for water affairs, Reza Ardekanian.

Zavin Kalat Dam is made of concrete and capable of holding 3 million cu. m. water. It is the sixth dam to come on-stream during the current Iranian calendar year (started March 21, 2003). Controlling seasonal floods, storing Zavin River's water, providing potable water to nearby areas, aquatics culture and irrigating 334 hectares of downstream lands are major goals of the dam. About 1.25 million cu. m. of the dam's stored water would be used for drinking and industrial purposes. Construction of the dam started in 1993 at the cost of about 32,000 million rials. The dam is located northeast of Khorasan near Sarakhs city.
