Completing the value chain, key to petchem industry growth

SHANA (Tehran) – The CEO of the National Petrochemical Company emphasized the importance of completing the value chain in Iran’s petrochemical sector, saying that Fars Province offers favorable conditions for establishing small-scale, low-water-consuming industrial units. He noted that several gas and industrial companies are currently investing in the southern part of the province.

According to the NPC, Hassan Abbaszadeh made the remarks Sunday, Oct. 12, during the opening ceremony of the Shiraz Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Exhibition. Highlighting the province’s industrial heritage, he said Fars is the birthplace of Iran’s petrochemical industry, where the country’s first petrochemical plant began operating about 60 years ago.

Abbaszadeh noted that the province’s gas resources are being used to supply feedstock to petrochemical facilities, adding that Shiraz Petrochemical Company was one of the country’s first complexes and has long played a key role in the industry’s development. “Today, Shiraz Petrochemical continues to maintain its leading position through the production of diverse products,” he said.

Shiraz petrochemical expansion permit to be issued soon

The deputy oil minister said Iran’s current petrochemical production capacity stands at 100 million tons per year and is planned to increase to 131.5 million tons by the end of the Seventh Development Plan. He announced that a permit for the expansion project of Shiraz Petrochemical will soon be issued as part of efforts to complete the value chain.

Abbaszadeh highlighted the province’s strategic role in petrochemical supply and infrastructure, noting that Shiraz Petrochemical is not only a producer and exporter of unique products but also serves as a “university” of the industry, having trained many specialists who now contribute to Iran’s petrochemical sector.

He stressed that completing the value chain is essential under current conditions and that Fars Province has strong potential to host low-water industries and small-scale units that strengthen the sector. “Several gas and industrial companies are now investing or operating in southern Fars,” he said, adding that the Oil Ministry supports such projects to expand the value chain and boost national productivity.
