Petchem sector stresses transparency, market stability

SHANA (Tehran) – National Petrochemical Company said the country’s petrochemical production chain operates under full transparency, with all data on feedstock consumption, production, sales and inventories recorded online and accessible to regulatory bodies.

Speaking on state television, Mohammad Motaqi, director of downstream industries development at the NPC, said integrated monitoring systems function as a glass room for the sector, preventing rent-seeking, hoarding and unauthorized sales.

Motaqi said production and sales systems are linked to supervisory platforms, including the Ministry of Industry’s comprehensive trade system and the national taxpayer platform, ensuring all transactions and invoices are electronically registered.

He added that during the recent 40-day conflict, authorities froze base prices for petrochemical products at pre-war levels despite sharp increases in global prices. Some exports were also voluntarily suspended to prioritize domestic supply and maintain market stability.

According to Motaqi, strategic materials used in essential goods — including PET bottle resin, medical supplies, serum bags and flour sacks — were stockpiled before the conflict to ensure uninterrupted supply during wartime conditions.

He said the market experienced temporary price volatility after the ceasefire because of psychological pressure and fears of shortages rather than actual supply deficits. Global petrochemical prices, particularly polyethylene, also surged because of regional tensions in the Persian Gulf.

Motaqi said production units have largely maintained output and are moving toward stable operations, while increased supply and declining demand in recent weeks have already pushed prices downward.
