Iran Gas Exports to Baghdad at 14mcm/d by June

TEHRAN (Shana) -- An Iranian gas official said the country would bring its natural gas exports to the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, to 14 million cubic meters per day from currently 9 mcm/d on average.

Speaking to Shana, Behzad Babzadeh, director of international affairs of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), said Iran started gas exports to Baghdad back in June 2017, almost a year ago, and the amount of the item's flow to the Iraqi city is planned to increase to 14 mcm/d in the second year of exports as per a deal the two countries.

Iran and Iraq, both members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), have signed a gas contract based on which Iran has undertaken to supply to Iraq's Baghdad 6 mcm/d of natural gas in the first year and 14 mcm/d of the item in the second day of exports.

The exports were also expected to reach the ceiling of 30 or 35 mcm/d during the third day of the exports, he said.

Babazadeh said Iran was currently exporting an average of 8.5 to 9 mcm/d of natural gas to Baghdad, adding, in June, the first year of gas exports to Baghdad would come to an end and the second year would start.

The Iraqi government approved a deal in late 2017 to import gas from Iran to the eastern border province of Diyala, increasing purchases of the Iranian fuel, which started in June after several years of delays.

As per the deal, Iran committed itself to exporting gas to the Iraqi capital Baghdad and the southern Iraqi city of Basra.

About 12 mcm/d of gas per day are currently transferred to Baghdad, making Iraq the second largest gas customer of Iran after Turkey, which imported about 21 mcm/d in 2016, according to the latest BP Statistical Review of World Energy.

Basra, Iraq's second largest city, also needs Iranian gas to feed its power plant as part of efforts to reduce outages that have turned into a persistent source of public discontent and the export will commence soon.
