Gas Exports can be Vital in Ensuring National Security: Official

TEHRAN (Shana) – An Iranian gas official says boosting the country's gas exports to neighboring states can increase Iran's national security.

According to the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), Saeid Momeni said Iran has planned an 8% rise in gas exports by the end of the 6th development plan to 2022, adding, "Gas exports to neighboring countries is one of the factors contributing to the security of the country."

He said Iran is currently exporting 46 million cubic meters of gas per day to neighboring countries including Iraq, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Armenia.

"The figure suggests that gas exports could play a role in providing national security, because when we export, it means we have security," Momeni argued.
