Iran Plans 68 bcm Gas Consumption by Power Plants

TEHRAN, Oct. 24 (Shana) – Iran's power plants will have consumed 68 billion cubic meters of natural gas over the course of the current Iranian calendar year which began on March 21, a gas official said.

Speaking to Shana, Saeid Momeni, director of gas supply at the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), said last year the volume stood at 62 bcm and it is hoped to increase to 68 bcm this calendar year.

He said a great majority of Iran's power plants run on natural gas, adding consumption of their liquid fuel has decreased dramatically.

Natural gas consumption for power generation reduces air pollution by power plants.

Iran consumers 102 million cubic meters of natural gas per day in major industries.

It also burns 20 mcm/d in for cement making and 22 mcm/d in steel industries.

Furthermore, the country consumes 45 mcm/d in petrochemical industries and 260 mcm/d for power generation.
