Blaze Not Affecting Environment, Public Health

TEHRAN, July 12 (Shana) – Deputy Chief of the HSE Department of the Ministry of Petroleum for Environment Affairs Mohammad-Taqi Jaafarzadeh said on Tuesday that last weekend blaze in Bou Ali Sina Petrochemical Plant had not the least impact on health of citizens and regional employees.

Jaafarzadeh told Shana that studies show the smoke caused by the fire in the the 2001C storage tank and the paraxylene tower of Bou Ali Sina Petrochemical Plant had not impact on health of the citizens.

He said heavy and aromatic compounds and lack of appropriate conditions for full combustion of the substances could lead to dissemination of VOC and particles of carbon and smoke.

He added that the fire did not feature full combustion of the hydrocarbon compounds, otherwise VOC pollutants could have go to the atmosphere, poisoning the people.

Furthermore, based on reports available, wind direction was from west and northwest towards east and southeast and the pollution caused by smoke was far away of the populated regions, said Jaafarzadeh.

He said outcome of investigations also show that density of the pollutants at the time of fire was times too low to affect health of the citizens and staff.

Fire broke out in Bu Ali Sina Petrochemical Company on July 6 and it was controlled until Thursday morning, it re-started again on Thursday but under control of the forces in the scene.

Petroleum Minister Bijan Zangeneh was on a visit to Mahshahr to oversee the firefighting operation at the scene.

The incident has inflicted severe damage on various parts including the process tower of the complex, naphtha storage tanks, pipelines and connections, as well as thousand barrels of naphtha as a scarce and strategic by-product of oil.

Covering an area of 36 hectares in the northwest of the Persian Gulf in Khuzestan province, Bou Ali Sina Petrochemical Plant is situated in Mahshahr Special Economic Zone.

The plant is owned by Iran's National Petrochemical Company (NPC) and produces 1.75 million ton per year of aromatics and by-products.
