Pre-Startup of SRU Unit of Abadan Refinery

TEHARN April 07(Shana)--The pre-startup tests of the sulfur recovery unit of Abadan Refinery, located south west of Iran, started on Monday.

The unit will supply the sulfur required by the refinery, said a senior official with the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORDC).

Saeid Mahjoubi said the gasoline unit of the refinery will come on-stream by the next three months, and said once the gasoline unit comes online the SRU unit of the refinery will be operational and will work with full capacity.

He further said the gas recovered by refining gasoline will be delivered to the sulfur unit of the refinery.

The SRU unit will recover sulfur from sour gas, added the official.

Sulfur is widely used in agricultural, military and healthcare industries, and Iran can export sulfur to make gains.

The Claus process is the most significant gas desulfurizing process, recovering elemental sulfur from gaseous hydrogen sulfide.

The multi-step Claus process recovers sulfur from the gaseous hydrogen sulfide found in raw natural gas and from the by-product gases containing hydrogen sulfide derived from refining crude oil and other industrial processes.
